粛清により一族が没落したドクイム（イ・ソラ/子役）は幼い頃から宮女として仕えるようになる。
一方、朝鮮王朝21代国王英祖（イ・ドクファ）の孫、世孫イ・サン（イ・ジュウォン/子役）は悲劇的な事件で父を失い、宮中で孤独に育つ。
ある夜、サンはドクイムの機転により窮地を救われ、ドクイムにほのかに想いを寄せるも再会は叶わず時が流れる。
数年後、成長したドクイム（イ・セヨン）は持ち前の聡明さで尚宮たちから目をかけられつつも自分の生き方を模索していた。
そんなある日走っていたところ足を踏み外し、近くにいた世孫（ジュノ/2PM）を巻き込み池に落ちてしまう。
反省文を書くよう命じられたドクイムだったが、書庫を掃除している最中、中へ入ってきた世孫を司書と勘違いし、無礼な態度で追い返してしまう。
怒った世孫は何度も書き直しを命じ、2人は次第に距離を縮めていく。
だが宮中では勢力争いが激しさを増しイ・サンは命を狙われることに…。
